If it says that a defrag would take this long then that is probably a large portion of the problem. When your files are extremely fragmented you will increase the time it takes to find anything on the hard drive. I personally would recommend that you defrag as soon as possible and set up a time when you do this routinely (preferably weekly.) You will probably notice an immediate improvement in system performance.
Think about it this way if you had 100 files with 100 pages per file in a file cabinet, would you want p57 of file 63 to be right next to p92 of file 1 ? That is a rough analogy of what is meant when your hard drive is "fragmented."
