EQIM was broken when they went to using the Universat Chat Server (or whatever it's called) for channels. Which of course, causes them to go down much more often, and requiring you to log/zone alot more to get them back up
EQIM and the orginal channels worked off of some sort of private IRC server iirc, which is how the trillian plugin was able to work.
