Actually, the hotbutton fix isn't really that hard. The hotbutton window has an individual set up for each of the different hotboxes. All you need to do is copy the files for boxes HB2-HB4 and paste those in after the </screen> at the end of your custom file, but before the </xml> and you will have the use of the default 2-4 hotboxes but your primary hotbox1 will still be the modded verison. All you will need to do is add the settings button, but that isn't completely necessary to make the file useable. At least my custom hotbox file worked fine without it.
I'm sure if you give a link to the file you were using before that the other, myself, or someone else here should be able to do a quick mod to it if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.
