Default newbie to Photoshop 7

hello,

i apologize for the title its incorrect im not using PSP, im using photoshop - im getting my acronyms confused again..ugh my head hurts.

im new to Photoshop 7, but fluent with xml. im trying to create grafx for a new mod. i need to change the background colors of the window_peice#.tga files, while retainging, the "gold" button colos and red/brown book colors.

I understand the alpha channel.

I have tried a few variations, but it all leads to a complete tint of the grafx.

can anyone please provide a newbie friendly instruction on how to do this?

thanks in advance.

This is one example..
Id like to leave the gold filigree, but change the black/grey colors to soemthign else say, orange or red for example.

would i use the magic wand and select the gold portions (this would work, in time and practice using wand) or is there a faster solution?

ahh... Using 'select by color' is much faster in this case rather than using the magic wand

use the + and - color pickers I circled in red.. they are highly underused. play with the fuzziness too. That will help define the selection better.
