Custom UI's and the free to play eq
So I have been out of game for about a year and just now returning. I have been dinking around tuning things up under the free to play version. When I came back I seem to have lost my custom ui's I thought due to patches and what not but I can't seem to get them to work. Is there an issue with it because of free to play version or has something changed? I have always used the AYA UI.

Other than a few display limitations such as the reduced inventory slots and being unable to use the mail features, there is no difference between a ftp UI and a Gold UI.
The code is the same and any (working) UI will function with any subscription be it ftp, silver, or gold.

Check your directory tree structure. It's probably unzipping to a nested subdirectory.

Everquest -> UI -> AYA -> files
is there a folder between AYA and the files, ie. another AYA folder?

the new F2P model often downloads a new version of EQ in a totally different section of your HDD. The best way to fix this would be to right click on the new EQ icon on your desk top and check the properties section of the target. Then go to that exact place in your file strcture and 9 times out of 10 you will find that only default UI subfolder is listed.
