Default Viewport, Aspect Ratio, and resolution

Ok some info/thoughts about viewport / aspect ratio / resolution...

Aspect Ratio is: (Are you ready?)

Aspect Ratio is a measure of the relative width and height of the display.. Notice that your monitor screen is slightly rectagular (It is wider than it is tall). This creates a non-uniform display aspect that can make images longer or shorter in one of the axial directions.. Imagine the screen has a resolution of 100x100 pixels. That would mean that each pixel is a little wider that it is tall. Thus, if we were to draw a 10x10-pixel square, it would look like a rectangel! This is a side effect of aspect ratio. The standard computer monitor has an aspect ratio 4/3 or 1.33 times wider than it is tall. Hence, if square is to be square, the screen resolution can't be NxN. The resolution(*viewport*) must have the same aspect ratio as the screen..

For example, resolution of 640x400 has an aspect ratio of 8/5 or 1.6, which is slightly larger than the screens 4/3 or 1.33. This will have the effect of making squares tall. On the other hand, the resolution of 640x480 has an aspect ratio of 640/480 or 1.33, which is equal to the monitors aspect ratio, and thus squares will be squares! When writing 3d games it's important to use a video mode that has an aspect as close as possible to that of the screen.. This helps objects keep their proper dimensions when they are rotated; otherwise; as objects are transformed, they will get taller and wider, or vice versa..

All that was from the book Black Art of 3d Game Programming..
I was basing my 4/3 aspect ratio on that information...

So according to that:
If you wan't a truly non-distorted display,
You should use a resolution with the same aspect that your monitor has..

And I think the same is true for the viewport.. You should use a viewport with the same aspect ratio as your monitor..

Eloora: The reason 1280x1024 (5/4)looks distorted to me and 1024x768(4/3) looks good is because I have a 17 in. monitor that has an aspect ratio of 4/3..

The reason 1280x1024 looks good to you and 1024x768 looks distorted is because you have a 19 in. monitor (most 19 in., I believe, have an aspect ratio of 5/4)..

Just uploaded v1.2 of tablets..

-Fixed Map Window: Dropping in other people's map mods will work..

-I made the map window much smaller than the default..

-Fixed the bug that WBBuch discovered with dropping in mods

-Colored Health Indicators added to Group, Player, Target, PetInfo Windows.
75%-100% Green
50-75 Yellow
30-50 Orange
15-30 Red
below 15 blinking red

-Added enoks clearclass animations so background will show through

-TK Class Animations can now be installed

-Added Deity Name to inventory window

-Changed a couple graphics here and there.. And am using TK_Textures for backgrounds

-I'm sure I forgot some thing but those are the important things

You'll have to redownload whole UI.. A patch would have been to big to attach here..

Is anyone experiencing any added lag from this UI, before or after the patch? Maybe it's my computer being rather hot all the time but I've seen some extra lag, just wondering if the UI could be to blame. I load the default and a different low lag UI and seemed to have some of the lag remain but not as much.

I just loaded the UI two nights ago. I LOVE it. I have not seen one I like any more than this anywhere.

I was coming here to ask the same question just posted, though. I am having a lot of lag for the last few days, though I cannot definitively place the time it started to blame it on the UI. However, since I have the same problem each time I play, even after rebooting the machine, and with the issue being raised by the prior poster, I sure am worried that this is the cause.

Please tell me it's not, or that there is a fix, because I cannot go back to my okd UI now!

Glad it cleared up!!

How about you Eloora any luck?

Is there a repeating warning/error in your uierrors.txt?

The UI shouldn't cause any internet lag... However each indicator is 5 gauges.. So in a full group with a pet and target up, EQ is drawing 35 Indicator Gauges + the 12 actual gauges and with pet gauges on that's 6 more.. That's 53 total gauges EQ has to draw every frame. This makes the UI take a FPS hit when compared to the default.. But I was still getting a little over 100 fps stareing at the ground in POK... I forgot what FPS I got with the default.. I will check it when I get a chance..

If you would like to check your frames per second.. Get FRAPS at www.fraps.com


I included the Player/Group/Target/Pet windows without indicators in the mods folder.. If the Video Hit is too much for your system you can use them..

I noticed that both of you are on XEV maybe it could just be your server acting out..

Other than that I really don't know

Eloora: I looked into it some... I suspect you are still using cairenn's buff window.. Well I found that my UI is still haveing compatablity issues.. Specifically with mods that have custom WindowDrawTemplates and Animations.. Surprised you didn't notice it in the last version..

I'm releasing a patch here that addresses some (Hopefully all) of these issues

So if you are adding a custom mod to this UI and have a sudden drop in framerate hopefully this patch will fix it up for ya..



As for the fps comparisons..
I have an athlon 2500+ with 512 megs of ram and a geforce 4 ti with 128/megs of ram..
I did all my testing in windowed mode
I was stareing at the ground in East Free Port
numbers are an average over 2 minutes

the default UI in full group and pet up I get 157fps

Tablets WITHOUT indicators in a full group and pet up I get 146fps

Tablets WITH indicators in a full group and pet up I get 124fps

Now I must sleep

I find no place for my current hitpoints. Maybe Im just overlooking it. Cant find it on inventory screen either. Anyway to add this somewhere on a existing box. Thanks Love the UI =)

Hey,
I try your UI and i love it. Its good i can do the viewport i get som fluidite. But i am bard, and when a charm a mob when the charm worn off the pet window disappear... Its just a litle bug i see. Anyway keep up the good work
