Default How do I edit .tga files

I tried to edit Window_Pieces06.tga with Adobe photoshop 5.0 limited edition and I cant figure it out. Please help. As you can see in the screenshot, im trying to find a way to open my photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition to view this right page.. I dont have the listed buttons.. and in order to change my right screen to make it black under the blue icon, I need a way to get this to open.. any sugestions on how to display the "alpha 1",besides spending $ to go out and get a better photoshop?.. My 5.0 only shows under "layers " the Window_piece06.(RGB )photo. It will not display Blue, Green, Red or Alpha 1.

The screenshot is photoshop 6.0 from a friend.

I use a program called Project Dogwaffle to turn my tga files into bmp files (and vice versa). It's free and easy to use. I just don't want to bother to learn how to use a complicated program like photoshop or deal with layers.

I seperate the picture into two .bmp files: one for the colors and one for the alpha. I don't do any actual editing in PD. Then I use Paint (comes free with windows) to edit the two .bmp files seperately. Then Project Dogwaffle to combine them back into a tga with transparency.

I find Paint.NET is one of the easiest graphic programs out there, and it's free too. It shows transparency by default, but doesn't let you edit it, however there's a transparency plugin that lets you adjust the transparency for any selection you make.

Paint.NET:

The transparency plug in:

I find that's a lot easier than working with a separate alpha channel, it's much easier to just make a selection and choose to have it transparent, not transparent, or anything in between.
