Ok I followed the instructions as far as makeing a new folder off my defalult folder in the ui directory

I loaded several mods ( could this be the problem? Am I limited to one mod only?)

these are the files I loaded into my custom folder...

t.king icons op2
t.king celtic inventory
t.king spell bar with book
t.king dwarf spell book

and when i went into game and typed /loadskin dwarfs 1

i ended up with nothing and have this error file

Did you create the new skin directory under Default or did you create it along side Default under the UIFiles directory. In your UIfiles directory you should see something similar to the following:

c:\Everquest\UIfiles\
default
newskindir
secondnewskindir


In this example all three of these are directories under UIfiles.

And did you copy all the files in the default into your new folder Dwarfs? Cause by the looks of all the errors, it seems you are missing default files from the drawfs folder...

As we keep pointing out over and over and over and OVER again, do NOT copy your default folder into your custom folder!

VI set it up (quite a long) time ago so that you no longer need to do it. If EQ does not find a file in your custom folder, it will automatically go look for it in the default folder. This way, the ONLY files that are supposed to be in your custom folder and the files that are actually customized. Which, nine times out of ten, means that when VI comes along and changes things in the interface, your mods *won't* get fubar'ed!

ok my folder looks like this.. C:\Program Files\EverQuest\uifiles\default\dwarfs

as far as copying the stuff out of defalts... umm no, guess i missed the part that said to do that.. see said it would be a bone head mistake... ok going to try that and see if it works. Ill let ya know in a min or two.

What you want it to look like is:
C:\Program Files\EverQuest\UIFiles\Dwarfs


You didn't miss it. It isn't there. See my post right above yours.

You do not want to nor do you need to copy the default folder files into your new skin dir. In doing so you make it so that everytime Verant updates the files you will break. You only want ot have the files that have been changed from the original files in your new skin dir. That way you only have the changed files to deal with when Verant changes things. And optimally you want to make new files with your custom info in it and just use and <include> statement to get the original files info in to your new skin. There are a number of threads in here that cover this optimal format. But in general Verant has made things so that you do not need to have the original files in you new skin dir.

By copying the default files to your new skin dir you make it so that you have to keep editing your custom skin directory to keep up to date with Verant. This gets to be a real pain in the neck since Verant is always changes the files.

Sorry, sometimes I forget not everyone is on the same boat. Check some of these threads and what they are talking about. It will give you some ideas about how far we have taken the custom skins to protect them from breaking.

And if you do a search for things related to keeping your UI from breaking or patching or the like.

There is a good bit of info there that will explain how some of us have gotten around the problems that Verant imposes everytime they make a change. By doing these things we have made it so that unless Verant make a huge change to the UI system the skin will continue to work without needing to be patched. This last Verant patch was an example. With the new skin that we have out there, there was no need to make any changes to our skins because they came up just fine.

Your custom AlarmWindow isn't current. Delete it from your custom folder. Then try again.

Understandable... I see your angle... I myself prefer to keep it the old way... I merely update the files everytime a new patch comes along, and add it into my other folders.... time consuming yes, but I have yet to have a problem, whilst other people seem to be crashing, I have yet to do so. So im just going to keep going error free and keep doing it. Old fashion... yes.. troublesome to keep adding new patches.. indeed (though not troublesome for me)... crashing because of patch... nope not once...

I would say judging by the fact that your Animation file does not show up in this list that you are using a custom animations file. More than likely your Animations file is out dated. Check with the place you got the skin from to see if they have an updated animations file or an updated skin. Once you get that file replaced you will probably be fine. The reason the error is coming up when it reads the EQUI_AlarmWnd.xml file is because it does not know what this object is. This object was supposed to have been defined in two other files and one of the files that defines it is coming from your default directory so I know that will be good but since your EQUI_Animations.xml file is not coming up as having a warning message in this list I would say that you have this file in your custom skin so it is probably where the error is.
