Myxiplx's UI question & comments thread

Introduction
This is the latest incarnation of my UI, it's changed a lot over the years, but I think it's still true to it's original aim; to give you a clear wide viewing window, with everything you need at your fingertips. While you need a lot of controls these days in Everquest, I'm trying very hard to keep things as uncluttered as possible.

As before, the map can be kept open without interfering with your view (very handy for pulling!), and I've kept most features along the bottom and shrunk the viewport, so framerates should be 15-20% better than running fullscreen.

Installation
  • Unzip this file into your everquest uifiles folder.
  • Copy the .ini file into your main everquest folder.
  • Load the UI with /loadskin myxiplx_UI_v2.1
  • Load the default layout with /copylayout
Look for the settings from myxiplx_antonious
  • Set the viewport. This will change for every screen, but it will be something like:
    /viewport 0 0 1280 700 1
Just change the 1280 and 700 to the width and height you need on your screen.

Changes in v2.1:
  • FIX - can close chat windows again
  • FIX - can resize chat windows from the top, as well as move them
  • FIX - 5 slot potion belt included
  • FIX - Odd graphics on player window should be fixed
  • FIX - Voice bar shows active speaker in correct location
  • FIX - Player voice functions now work properly
  • FIX - Spell names now line up properly in short duration buff window
  • UPDATE - borders removed from group window voice indicators
  • UPDATE - should be able to move buffs more easily
  • UPDATE - Horizontal Pet window has a pop up buff list
  • UPDATE - Better scroll graphics in target window
  • UPDATE - Clearer graphics in group window
  • NEW - buff names are hidden by default, and can be shown at will.
  • NEW - Mercenary button added to HB1 for quick access
  • NEW - Wider pet window, fits underneath main panel

Changes in v2.0:
  • Completely new group window, with:
    - SoD role support
    - Colour changing HP bars
    - Larger clickable player areas
    - Full voice support
  • Updated target window, with target buffs
  • New, tidier layout
  • Chat windows can now be moved easily
just drag them by the top border.
  • Buff icons are larger, to help identify types of spell
  • Pet window updated, you have the option to show all buff names on screen
Original pet window is in the options folder if you don't like this feature
  • New gauges for Group leadership and Raid leadership points
  • Slightly larger map
  • Smaller aura window
  • Neater and smaller discipline window
  • Fix: Target con indicator working again
  • Fix: Target gauges don't obscure group names
  • Fix: Casting timer gauge correct size again
  • Fix: Combat indicator shape fixed
  • Fix: SoD XML warnings fixed

Changes in v1.4:
  • Update: 10th spell gem spot added
  • Update: UI elements resized to match the new larger spell bar
  • Update: 5th potion belt slot added
  • Update: Hot bar 2 made slightly wider
  • Update: Current level added to selector window
  • Update: Installation instructions modified for new /copylayout function (thanks SKlug!!)
  • Update: Aura window moved to centre of screen

Main Features:
  • Advanced target window with colour changing group health indicators.
  • Much larger mana bar integrated into main hotkey.
  • Main stats on screen at all times.
  • Player health integrated into group window.
  • Map can toggle between two background colours.
  • Advanced 'clickies' bandolier, giving easy access to entire inventory. Great for clickies, tradeskills and looting.
  • Wide, clear viewing area
  • Important info clustered in one place for easy viewing
  • Custom EQ button showing armour pieces (great for clickies)
  • Permanent space for map
  • Potion belt next to map works as Auto-Inventory dropper
  • Buff lists showing full names
  • Five chat boxes as standard, without visible text input areas
  • One dedicated chat box for text input
  • All four hotkey windows on screen
  • Big expanded bank window (no more digging through your bags)

What I've tried to do is give each item it's own space on the screen. For example, all buffs run along the left edge, inventory and armour items are all in the bottom right. Where this really shines is group and combat information. Everything you need for combat should be clearly visible in the centre.

I've seen UI's with more screen space available, but they generally do it by lumping all the buttons together, making it impossible to find what you want quickly. I've done my best to avoid that with this UI, hopefully getting the best of both worlds and having a clear screen with lots of info available.

Known bugs
- Bandolier with bags can crash EQ in some situations.

This is a long term bug in EQ; any mod using open inventory slots has a risk of crashing the client, and it seems that crashes are more common since the recent patches.

However, the crashing only happens in certain situations, and it's quite possible to avoid them altogether. I find that moving inventory slots to the bandolier has completely eliminated crashing for me.

The main cause of the crashing is zoning when the UI is trying to display slots in a bag that's no longer there. To avoid this:
  • Always use 10 slot bags.
  • Don't zone with the bandolier open.
  • When you die, don't open the bandolier until you've looted your bags again corpse (The SoD updates may help here too).
  • If you're using a clicky port item which means you have a bag on your cursor as you zone, don't open the bandolier after zoning. Put the bag back using the normal inventory first.

Recommended Usage
You can now move chat windows from the top edge, but you may want to hide the chat window names. To do this, right click on the window and choose rename. Just enter a single space for the name to effectively remove it.

While I've still got chat windows for combat and spell spam, by default they're only a single line high. I'm now using Audio Triggers to notify me of the important stuff, using AT&T's site to create custom voices where needed.

I also recommend customising your hotbuttons. Mine are quite a lot smaller than the default, and are a lot easier to read if you create your own names. Use macro keys and:
  • "/alt act" for AA's
  • "/doability" for actions. 1-6 for standard abilities. 7-10 for combat ones
  • "/cast" for spells
  • "/disc" for disciplines

Supported Resolutions
Because of the new /copylayout function, I'm no longer including multiple layouts. Instead a single 1280x960 windowed layout can be easily copied to any other resolution.

Inventory & clicky slots added to Bandolier window
For a while I've been trying to come up with a good solution for clickies for people with lots of these (I know of people with 24 or more clickies!).

Changes in v1.3:
  • Inventory bags removed from map as standard (now optional extra if you still want it).
  • Instead bandolier window has been converted to a pop up inventory & clickies window.
  • Raid window updated - more groups on screen at once and buttons are grouped in a more logical order
Changes in v1.2:
  • Update: Support for 1280x960 resolution added.
Allows EQ to fit just above start bar
Note: I forgot to add this comment in the readme file:
When running at 1280x960 resolution run the command /viewport 0 0 1280 723 to get the screen at the right size.
Changes in v1.1:
  • Bugfix: Graphics on hotbar 4 corrected.
  • Bugfix: Invisible border on player and group windows corrected.
  • Update: Attack Indicator now shaped to fit UI.
  • Update: New Endurance bar options for melee and hybrids.

I don't have any plans to release custom hotkey layouts I'm afraid. As you pointed out the hotkeys are an integral part of the design with this UI, so making custom layouts would be an absolute nightmare.

However, for some good news, all the group window changes are already included. Group leaders show up in green, merenaries in orange, and you can set roles for all six group members from the one window.

I like the 2x5 set to pair up several of my hotkeys- especially that piece set up by you with multiple gear slot clickies to configure, but cant add that piece by you here or it crashes to default since some hotkey banks are incorporated with other windows.

Any plan to incorporate the new group window changes from default to set groupleader, tank, puller, and show group leader name in green?
