GIMP Help

I downloaded Gimp and it works and such, I just can't figure out how to isolate the alpha channel for transparency. I can see the background filter for transparency, i click it and the whole image is transparent, and i can select the alpha channel with rgb values but how they interact is still beyond me. Can anyone with GIMP experience help me out here?

I finally figured out how to make a transparent .tga. My first task was to make a pointer:

Now on to bigger and better things :)
