How do I make something TRANSPARENT?!

I have Paint (obviously), The GIMP, and XnView, but I can't figure out how to make something TRANSPARENT! I want to know so that I can make a spell bar modification of Pokemon, b ut I can't figure out how to put a picture in. (I was going to have one similar to a pixie spell bar in the downloads section (page 1 near the bottom) but with a giant Pikachu... but when I tried it, there was a big pikachu, BUT the spell gems (or where they should have been) were just white squares and all around pikachu it was a white square (because the image of him is square-shaped with him in the middle) How do I get rid of this "white square", or make the extra space transparent (like in the pixie spell bar)? :) Thanks!

Alpha channels. There are a number of good threads on it in the Graphics forums.

Try right clicking window and select window>background>texture
May have to do twice but should make window transparent
