Don't know about preserving the transparencies as I don't really use Gimp anymore, but you should be fine as long as you don't fiddle around with settings unknown. All you can do is download, do it, and see what happens.

I have a question - when I use XnView to open the Spellgems, how can I shrink pictures PROPORTIONATELY to make them 25 x 25, which is what each spellgem is supposed to be, isn't it? It's TERRIBLY HARD!
