Default 3D target ring weirdness

Really dont know how to explain this well but i'll try.

Just got a new computer which has a P4 and an Ati Radeon 9800 pro and newest drivers. On my old computer I had a athlon xp with Geforce 3 Ti 200.

The problem is on this new system with the radeon, the 3D target ring basically...looks like crap. On my old system it was pretty big and defined, and you could notice a big difference between all the different 3D rings you can download, with the new computer it looks really small and bland and you can hardly notice the difference between the different rings. Like if I targe tmyself the ring is like barely as big around as I am, with the old one it was a lot bigger. I transferred most of my settings from my old computer to this one (like eqclient.ini and the character .opt and ini files). The only thing different is that I am using all high quality settings now (high texture res, mip mapping, etc.).

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Search is your friend

In the SOE Corner Roger Sewell Posted: 3D Targeting Ring Some Answers where he explains that several of the ATI Radeon cards are having issues and they are working on it..

good luck!

Yeah. The problem is the way ATI cards display the ring. Not saying if it's ATI's fault or Sony's fault.
I know exactly what you nean, the ring is small, hard edged and "flat".
I dont think there's anything you can do about it or someone would have come up with a ring specifically for ATI cards by now. Be grateful that you see the ring at all, an awfull lot of people with Radeons don't.

I have a ATI 9700 Pro and I had to do the following:

Find...

TextureScale=

in your TargetIndicator.ini file in Default or Custom UI directory. The above line will be in each con section (7 total).

Change the number following the "=" to 1.0

This change should widen the ring to the full width.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Solonis... Your fix worked for me.. I have been seeing about half of the targeting ring, and that distorted. Used the fix you outlined and now my rings are looking great.

I had no idea that my video card was the culprit. Check the forums and learn a thing or two I guess.

That fix actually psuedo worked for me on the Mystical Ring of Illusion. It still lacks the soft, flowing 'aura' around the ring, and is still a hard circle, but it atleast looks prettier.

If it has to do with how EQ scales the textures of the indicator, it's probably just an incompatibility between ATI's drivers and EQ's graphics engine. They'll probably fix it in time for the patch on the 13th.

Just read that the 3.10 Catalyst drivers are supposed to be out next week.

(My pictures were initially dark, but lit up in Photoshop, so they might have a bit of a washed out effect to them. Can't do anything about it, my screenshots are naturally dark. =/)

We'll use the Mystical Ring of Illusion as this example.

Original:

Radeon 9700 Pro (Minus Fix):

Radeon 9700 Pro (With Fix Above):

As you can see, even with the fix, it still doesn't look perfect. The best way I can describe why it's doing that is this: Everquest is telling the video drivers to draw the texture on screen. The video drivers misinterpret what EQ is telling them, and draw it incorrectly, and the result is the mess above. You can try to override the original intructions set by the ring's creator to stretch out the texture and make it half way decent, as illustrated, but it still isn't as good as the original.

New drivers, or an update to the graphics engine should fix this problem, but for now, the fix above works alright. Atleast it doesn't look disgusting.

I used the same fix and had the same results. I was glad to have the entire ring visible, but I find that it made the ring very washed out and not as bold as it should be. Plus, it's basically as if you took the whole ring and smooshed it into the small space that was visible before. On a raid of 60+ people, forget about being able to use the target ring. It's nice to have the whole ring, but it's pretty useless to me because it's very hard to see.

If anyone knows a way to make the color brighter and bolder, or to make the ring larger, I'm all ears!

You could try making the texture itself brighter in Photoshop or some such.

That might work.

Here's the way my majestic ring and default ring looks on my ATI 9800 pro without the "fix" above. This is how they look without me doing anything to them:

Default ring:

Here are the screenshots with the exact same settings from my Nvidia geforce 3 system:

Kinda off topic, but also noticed the ATI renders some armor models a little differently. Looks worse for the most part...like on a lot of robes I can see people's bare chests, etc. Pretty weird.

Now that problem I've never had. I see some draw bugs with luclin models sometimes, but it's usually during animations, or when they're on a horse, and it isn't often.
