Project: Icon
I'm currently in the process of cleaning up the default EQ item files to make them more acceptable looking. You might not realize it, but all old EQ icons look horrible in the current state they're in.
Here's an example screenshot, showing a before and after shot of an item icon (the left necklace is the before, the right is the after):
As you can see, the left necklace is terrible looking, and although my rendition on the right isn't the best looking icon, it's much closer to what the icon was intended to look like.
What I'm doing:
- Touching up the alpha layer to bring old icons in-line with the quality of those from the newest couple expansions.
- Cleaning up icons that overlap, some of which have been ''wrong'' since EQ's original UI and the icons were pulled from 640x480 BMP files.
- Uniformly centering item icons.
- Removing stray purple pixels, erroneously left over from the conversion from BMP to TGA.
What I'm not doing:
- Significantly changing the colored pixel make-up of any original EQ icon.
- Making new icons.
I've gone through about a third of the dragitem files so far, and the results I've seen in-game have been great (in my opinion). I intend to go through all of the files and clean up any overlapping and incorrect alpha layer alignment (the Bard Epic 1.5/2.0 is WAY off for example).
Mostly looking for some feedback on this. I'm worried the final product will be too big for a single upload spot here at EQInterface, but we'll see.
Edit: I've finished all the icons and attached the files to this post. Give 'em a whirl and let me know what you think. Look for any flaws and report them here, and tell me what you think about the outer-edge glow I've added to the following three items, to increase visibility:
Rat Whiskers
Chitin Shell Shield
Black Pearl

Really really a cool idea!
I was going to do this myself but never had the time to go through them all.

I also wanted to ask for some feedback about something:
There are quite a few item icons that are nearly all black, and relatively hard to see, especially against dark inventory slots. I'm considering adding a faint white outer glow to them. I wouldn't alter the icon graphics whatsoever; it'd just be a faint glow around the edges of the icon. I'll try and do up an example screenshot and get it posted later today.

Using them at the moment and I love the looks.
Good idea on the outline, but a tad too intense for my taste. But I still can manually lower the intensity from the alpha channel a little so np.

If you find an alpha value or different color that you like for the aouter edge glow, please post the numbers here, if you would. I'm still trying to fine-tune that.
I'm done through file 24 so far. Will post them, and likely some more stuff tomorrow.

When its all complete, I will load it into EgrasUI and see how they look. With my UI I resize a TON of things to quite small (some clicky's 15 x 15) and will really need to test these files then.
The idea is a neat one as the files have not been worked on it some time.

Okie dokey, finished all the icon files. They're attached to the top post in this thread, and ready for beta testing.
Edit: If I did my math right, I worked with 1219 icons in total, excluding one spot that held the original EQ mouse cursor, one blank spot among the Kunark-era icons, and three blanks in the final file.

sorry to derail, but I was wondering if you still have the old (not old old, just PoP era old) spell gems and icons?
I can only find OLD classic versions or the new new ones and it's driving me nuts!

Define OLD OLD. I only know of two versions of the gems/spell icons.

There's another thread elsewhere about old spell icons, please move discussion of them to there.
http://www.eqinterface.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=17611
There are technically 3 spell icon sets though. The current, the set previous to that, and the spell icons from before the XML-based UI.

Removed the outer glow from the 3 icons I had added it too. With the higher icon quality, visibility on said icons doesn't appear to be as much of a problem anymore.
The three changed files are attached below.
