Default Need help with my poor computer performance!

My computer is about 5 years old now. It's been progressively getting worse over the last year or so. About two years ago, we had someone come over to fix our slow speed on the computer. So he came over and installed Windows XP for us (without telling us he did it illegally, not leaving the install disk). We previously had Windows 98. It took a while to get used to XP but now I'm attached to it.

Before the installation of XP, when I would play a game like EverQuest, it'd take me upwards of 4 minutes to "zone" from one part of the game to another. After the fix, it took me sometimes only 5 seconds or so, which is something to be envious of. However, since then the computer has been downgraded in performance once again. In EverQuest it can take up to 6 minutes sometimes to "zone" from one place to another, and many programs are slow to respond; it even takes several minutes to populate lists on drop-down boxes and in the "Add or Remove Programs" option in the Control Panel. Also, starting about a year ago, the monitor has been displaying gray streaks or lines to the side of anything dark, IE text, certain pictures, etc. I would take a screen shot to show you, but since then my PRINT SCRN key has also stopped working. On top of all this, the monitor that I'm currently using is extremely washed-out and faded in appearance. In order to get it to look quasi-normal I have to make Brightness to 0 and Contrast to 100... And then it looks very faded-out, anyway.

The problem with the wash-out appearance is probably in this monitor, but the fine lines and streaks aren't; it's done that with this monitor and another we tried.

And I can't seem to find the source of all of the pop-ups I'm getting, such as clickspring and xadsq.offeroptimizer.

Anyone able to help me find some solutions? Any ideas are welcome!

I'd post my system specifics, but I dunno where to find a list of them...

I am no expert but I'll try.

The monitor problems sound like a vid card issue if it is doing the same thing on more than one monitor.

The pop-up's are going to be hard to get rid of.
Did you try useing Adaware? It's a good program to use for spyware and some malware.
There are other programs out there that are slightly diffrent and look for diffrent things. One word of warning though, if the system is to full of spyware and such, you may have to reformat.

Just my opnion, maybe some others know of better ways to help.

AdAware is a good solution ... also, the more software you install the slower your computer becomes (escpecially is the programs you use runs in the background). If your list in "Add/Remove Programs" is long, maybe you should try removing some of them ... try by starting the "Task Manager" (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and see what programs are running and decide which of them you can live without.

Also consider finding a way to return to Win98, as it uses not nearly as much resources to run, as WinXP ... I know XP is a cool OS and I wouldnt want to use nothing else either, but ...

If you have a good friend that knows computers and whom you trust, make him/her go thru your machine and remove any superfluous software and what else is needed.

Another good program to try is Hijackthis. I have used it to rid my system of some spyware, but also other programs that would start on bootup which I didn't want to load.

Here is some info on Hijackthis:

Quote:
HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins.

Thank you for your nice replies.

I regret to inform you guys that I already have Ad-Aware, SpySweeper, and Norton Anti-virus...

Perhaps I should buy a new video card, then? How much do they run?

I've tried defragmenting but it say that it'd take over 10-14 hours...

I would re-format, as sasasaz has suggested, but the guy who installed XP (illegally! ) for us didn't leave us the re-format disk... So we'd have to buy WinXP over again. I've tried restore points but when I do them it says that when it restarts that it cannot reload the old restore point because of some error...

If it says that a defrag would take this long then that is probably a large portion of the problem. When your files are extremely fragmented you will increase the time it takes to find anything on the hard drive. I personally would recommend that you defrag as soon as possible and set up a time when you do this routinely (preferably weekly.) You will probably notice an immediate improvement in system performance.
Think about it this way if you had 100 files with 100 pages per file in a file cabinet, would you want p57 of file 63 to be right next to p92 of file 1 ? That is a rough analogy of what is meant when your hard drive is "fragmented."

First off and most important is: what are the specs of your 'puter?

Ram:
Hard drive space:
CPU type/speed:
Video card:

When ever you have an older computer, sometimes the easy fix for speed issues in gaming is hardware upgrades.

You can get a desent video card for around $100 that will run EQI with very little lag in high stress zones like the bazaar or POK.

As for the pop up issues... if anything else go to Panda Active Scan they will do a free virus scan and removal. It was the only one that picked of an ad worm that was on my wife’s 'puter.

Now here is an important thing... when you do manage to get the pop ups killed... DONT USE internet exploder anymore. It’s too easy to get viruses through IE just from web surfing. find a alternative web browser, I use Mozilla Firebird its a great browser, its got lots of perks to it over IE (like tabbed windows) and it lessens the chance of getting viruses.

As for the ghosting and the "washed out" look on your screen, just sounds like its time to get a new monitor. You can always look for a new one and have the ease of mind that you have a proper warranty. prices will range from about $100 for a 17" CRT monitor to upwards of $600 for a 22" CRT monitor I took my chances and picked up two used (no warranty) 21" Nokia monitors, $300 for both of them (free CD burner too) and they have done well, but if they fry at any time then I'm out $150.

So there is the detailed run down. Your always welcome to PM me with any questions if you like.

A year ago I was more or less in a similar situation.P3 500 geforce 256 vid card. But Ive run Xp since it's release.A friend had an old amd motherboard I got a 1.1 ghz chip to go in it for around 50 dollars.Moved my drives over let xp reset itself and I was up and running without a hitch.Big boost in performance...
But with the bar being raised(and ever anon)last month I went to tigerdirect and for around $300 dollars upgraded the Motherboard, got a 2ghz cpu,a geforce 5700 le vidcard a 5.1 speaker set up and a creative 5.1 sound card.Had to let Xp reset itself up again.
But if you dont have a legit copy of XP then your gonna have troubles.I have to agree with above poster that defrag of 10-15 hours is indicative of a mess of your hard drive(s).Defrag it when you go to bed...I wouldn't worry about defragging it once a week though(once a quarter is fine unless you've done a lot of installing removing).Your video card is going and your monitor has lost alot of the phospher the crt lights up on passes so those are must fixes.
I think the best most affordable solution may be moving the critical data of your hard drives onto some new already put together system(with a nice fresh legal version of XP)that has hardware that can handle the future...not limp with the past.Cheapest route is do it yourself....otherwise see above.
Best of luck to you =)

Default my 2 cp

Yes, I agree the defrag is a must do, and trust norton system works pro. Set him up to do the jobs of virus scan and defrag for a time whne the machine will be idle, just close the boxes with the results when you come back to the machine, ( I assume you will read and see the resukts first ). I use them all the time , secound off if you have pop ups then you have spy ware on your machine ( Spybot Search and Destroy is my weapon of choice ). Third video card will improve proformance seriously. and I cannot say it enough; Ram, Ram, Ram, and more Ram. I always spec a machine with the max and fastest ram it will handle.
If machine is 5 years old then, You might have to bite the bullet and get a new one. Its way over do and is probablye haveing trouble with dx9. You have to have that installed to really play EQ . My GF's machine has gone borderline and her machines specs are close to yours. And last unfortunatly you will need to get a legit copy of winxp (iI reccomend the pro version ) you will need it for the registration no. when you do upgrade to get it turned back on . I am sorry I have rammbled this long just my opion .

Default wow what a mess JK :)

Those all look like viruses or trojans.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nqqjalne] C:\WINDOWS\System32\jgweikuu.ex
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [482HGH95447AJ@] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Cvx137.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [alsmizc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\irxwjk.exe

You have a ton of crud in startup and Browser helper objects that are junk too... IE is probably really slow. The thing is most people never use anything that is automatically started in startup. You need to get your virus scanner to run all the way through. You also may need to try different scanners... Look for avast or antivir both have free home versions.

Take some time to learn about Browser helper objects. There is a program called BHO Deamon that lets you control these.

Goto sysinternals and download their startup manager. Dissable every thing in startup. Put back only things you know you need.

oh and the only reason defrag says 14 hours is cause those viruses or trojans are working your machine very hard... Defrag would go in under 2 hours if they were gone.

Ok good luck cya

I know a lot of this has already been mentioned, but I figured I'd go through some of it again from my experience.

First off, you'll have to clear out those spyware and browser hijack programs. Two programs I highly recommend downloading are Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (found here - just look for the "Ad-Aware Personal version" in the menu and get that, it's free). Once you install that, also make sure to update the program -- there should be a link or a button on the main window. Another really good one is Spybot Search & Destroy (found here). Again, make sure the program is fully updated after you install it by using the "Check for Updates" button that should be at the top of the scan window.

It will take a while to run these programs, so be sure you won't need the computer for a bit. Once you scan using either one (I tend to use both, back-to-back), select all the nasty things it finds and delete them. There might be some that it says are in use by Windows and you'll have to reboot to clear them (i.e. they're sitting in memory and can't be unloaded til you restart the system). I believe both programs offer the ability to do a full scan at start-up, you should probably do that too. It loads the scan program up the moment you reach the Windows desktop and runs the whole scan, all before anything else can load into Windows, so it can catch anything that tries to sneak its way back in via hidden registry entries.

Another good site to check out is Mike Lin's Home Page which has a bunch of useful little programs and tips. Pick up the "Startup Control Panel" and install that, it'll add right into your regular Control Panel as a new icon. Using that, you can find out if anything strange is trying to load on Windows startup. You can delete or uncheck any entries you don't know... but be VERY careful you know which ones you are removing, as it also shows the regular programs you do want to launch (like anti-virus programs, firewall programs, etc). Best way to be sure is to look at each entry, and if there's some kind of executable (EXE) file listed, search your drive for where it's at. Most of the good ones will be recognizable by the folder their in, especially things like Norton AntiVirus or the like that install default into the Program Files directory area. The sneaky stuff often likes to hide in your Documents directory area, or in the Temporary Internet Files or Temp directories.

After all that, use whatever program you have access to (Norton, or just the stuff that comes with Windows) to do a ScanDisk and Disk Defrag/Optimize. If ScanDisk comes across any files that it cannot fix until you restart, reboot and let it run (it'll probably be a strange looking blue DOS-like screen that comes up before you fully enter windows) so it can fix anything that Windows can't play with while it's using the files during the Windows session.

Another thing... the strange video behavior might also be due to heat problems. Some video cards, especially older ones, did not come with adequate cooling. Most these days have a dedicated cooling fan attached right onto the video card itself. But even with this, if your computer doesn't have good ventilation it can still get really hot in there. If you notice a lot of heat coming out from it, and you can safely leave it open, take the case panel(s) off and set up a small regular fan nearby to blow into it. If you can't safely leave it open (like if you have dogs or cats or even children that might poke around inside) then go out to your local Radio Shack or CompUSA and buy some case cooling fans (they're usually black and about 4 inches across) and mount them inside behind the vents. Just remember that too much exhaust creates negative pressure inside and will cause a lot of dust to get in and pile up inside... best thing is to have some blowing out (removing the hot air from inside) and some blowing in (pulling cooler air in), to provide good air flow. Same applies to the monitor, make sure you don't have anything laying on it that can block the vents around the case, otherwise it can't cool itself off. I have a cat who loves to sleep on top of monitors since they're warm, and she drives me crazy. :P

That should solve a lot of the performance problems. If you're still having problems with the system, look for Hijack This! from SpywareInfo, and there's some useful help on it at this site . That should clear up any browser hijacking (stuff that steals your home page and search features).

I would also STRONGLY recommend you pick up a good firewall program. I use Sygate Personal Firewall over anything else, as it's simple and doesn't use a lot of resources to run. I used to use ZoneAlarm, but once I switched from Win98 to WinXP, it gave me a lot of problems with EQ. Every time EQ would patch, ZoneAlarm would pop up and ask me if I wanted to newly changed program to access the internet -- which is good that it checks, but bad because I couldn't get out of the EQ window and release the cursor to be able to click on the "OK" button in ZoneAlarm. With Sygate all I have to do is hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager, then click on OK, then after EQ goes past log-in I just use the normal command (CTRL-R) to release the mouse and close the Task Manager and return to EQ. ZA force me to reboot the computer just to get free of it. But still, use a firewall program, since those can control just what does have access to your internet connection. If you see any strange program asking for permission, just deny it and later find out what it is and clean it out if you find it to be spyware.

And then there's of course the most obvious suggestion: keep your anti-virus program updated all the time. If you're using Norton and the subscription runs out, you might try switching to Avast! antivirus software since it's free -- you have to register, but it's a free registration for home use, and it lasts for some 13 or 14 months before you have to renew (also free).

And someone above mentioned this. Switch to another browser, get away from Internet Explorer. That program has so many bugs and security holes (just go to Microsoft's support site and look through all the fixes they have to offer up for it). Switch to Mozilla 1.x or Firefox 1.0, both at Mozilla.org, or try out Opera. Both use a "tab" system so you can have multiple browser windows open without having more than one program window open (i.e. one program button on the task bar). And both have a lot more security and stability, and since they don't have the Internet Explorer program's security holes.

Well, good luck and hope this helps!

EDIT: Just remembered something else. Check out PC Pitstop and run the tests they have there to find out if there are any other problems in your computer. It takes a few minutes to run all the tests, and I usually do use Internet Explorer for it since it handles the regular ActiveX scripts that PC Pitstop uses to scan the system. Just see what it says and follow directions there if you want to try to tweak performance.

Some personal notes about Ad-aware and Spybot:

1. Make sure you get Ad-aware (by Lavasoft)...DON'T install Adaware (by some other company). The Adaware is actually spyware! If you're using the links from Neori's post, you will be fine.

2. Ad-aware and Spybot will sometimes find different things. What I mean is that Spybot will locate a certain spyware that Ad-aware missed totally and Ad-aware will find things that Spybot misses. It's probably a good idea to download and run both.

Just hope it helps a little and prevents anyone from making the same mistake I did!
