Thank you so much Drakah! I had all but given up and resigned myself to the fact that I was simply untrainable in graphics work.
I have Photoshop 7.0 and tried absolutely every instruction to get the alpha channel to show up - all to no avail. Now I know why! I downloaded the update from Adobe and voila!
